Student Advisory Board

Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District

 

The Matanuska-Susitna Student Advisory Board is composed of student representatives from each secondary school in the Mat-Su School District. Its purpose is to advise the School Board as to the wants and needs of the students. Each high school is allowed four representatives and each middle school will have three representatives. Meetings are held once a month at a designated site during the school day and are considered authorized absences.

Student Advisory Board

A Student Advisory Board was approved by the School Board on November 19, 1979.

 

A Student Advisory Board will consist of student representatives of each secondary school in the Mat-Su School District. The purpose of this Board is to advise the School Board as to the wants and needs of students. The president or designee of this Board shall sit as an ex-officio member of the School Board at all public sessions of the School Board.

Purpose

The purpose of this Board is to act as an Advisory Board to the School Board. Its primary goals will be to allow for student input into educational decisions and to voice the concerns and needs of the students.

Membership

Student membership on the Board shall be as follows:

Each High School shall have four representatives; it should consist of at least one senior and one underclassman

 

Each Middle School or Junior High School will have three representatives; it should consist of at least one eighth grader and at least one underclassman

 

Combined High Schools and Middle Schools membership shall be the same as if both were separate schools.

 

Length of Term

Student representatives from high school shall be selected for two-year terms.

Student representatives from middle/junior high school shall be selected for a two-year term.

Term of office shall begin in May, as an observer, with full voting privileges beginning the following September (August).

Selection of students shall be made prior to April for the remainder of that year and the following year.

Unexpired terms of one semester shall be filled, until the completion of that school year as determined by the student governments of the respective schools.

Selection of Student Members

Students will be chosen through an application process. The applications will be distributed to the advisor contact at each school, and deadlines will be announced. Students who meet the qualifications are eligible to apply.

Applications will be reviewed by a district-wide group of teachers/advisors who will then select the student representatives and notify them of their positions.

The Superintendent or his/her designee (s) shall represent the central administration as a non-voting member (s).
